Ty Murray of LaPorte took these aerial shots of Elwood to illustrate just how big a 3,000 acre bite out of the countryside looks like. Go here to see a Google satellite view of Elwood:

Satellite view of Elwood Intermodal Facility

CenterPoint Intermodal is just a small fraction of what has been done in Will County. More intermodals and more warehouses take more and more farmland in a never ending ending cycle of overdevelopment, pollution and unsustainable growth. Note that the intermodal yard in the Google view at Elwood is over 10,000 feets long, top to bottom and two miles wide, side to side - a big inverted "L" shape. There is still plenty of room for back filling and "growth."

Elwood Aerial View - each little rectangle is an intermodal container or semi tractor or railroad car. This is Elwood alone - there are four more existing or planned intermodal facilities in Will County plus tens of thousands of acres of additional warehouses. Entrance to the facility is at lower right. Up to eight trucks per minute pass this interesection daily This view does NOT include the warehouse area at Elwood - see third picture below.

Uneconomic growth takes place when the cost in natural resources and well-being exceeds the value of the goods produced.
